With Eagles training camp just about two weeks away, we’re starting to get some relevant news on some of the lingering injuries scattered across the roster.
In short, the PUP list is a tool used by teams prior to training camp if a player is unable to participate in practice for injury reasons. If a player is placed on the list, they are eligible to come off it at any time during camp. If said player isn’t fully healthy by the beginning of the regular season, that player will have to miss at least the first four games of the season before getting back on the field.
With both Toth and Jackson, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that these two are going to miss time. Both suffered torn ACLs in the final Week 18 game against Dallas last season.
Regardless of their PUP status, Toth and Jackson both still have a chance to make the 53-man roster.
Jackson in particular is a very interesting prospect and stole a lot of headlines during camp last year. The 6-foot-7 converted quarterback was turning heads during the preseason, before suffering a severe back injury during camp, which essentially shut him down for the entire season. He reentered the lineup in the final meaningless game of the season and managed to score his first NFL touchdown, only to tear his ACL a few plays later.
Given the current depth the Eagles have at tight end, Jackson could certainly stake his claim to a roster spot if he returns to practice before the start of the regular season.
Toth, on the other hand, will have a steep hill to climb if he wants to make the initial roster. He’s appeared in nine games as an Eagle over the past two years and is pretty clearly a fringe roster guy. The Eagles have an abundance of depth along their offensive line, so if Toth is unable to suit up before the start of the season, he could be the odd man out.
