The Eagles’ new wordmark design stinks. Please change it back

While several teams around the league continue to rebrand themselves with new, fresh takes on their logos and wordmarkings, the Eagles have remained neutral for the most part. We finally got the kelly green jerseys back, which will be implemented during the 2023 season. But aside from that, the classic Eagles logo and iconic wordmark design has stayed intact for the duration of my life time.

Until today. June 16, 2022, the Philadelphia Eagles changed their wordmark design from this:

To this:

Here’s the thing — I have no issue with tweaking a logo or wordmark to fit modern trends. There are plenty of teams who have done it successfully throughout the years. But at least put some effort into it.

The OG Eagles wordmark is pretty iconic around Philly. It catches your eye and just from the design of the lettering, you immediately recognize it’s associated with the Eagles. The new one lacks any kind of creativity or originality. There’s no pop to it; it looks like a fifth grader made it with word art during their arts and crafts period.

Luckily, this isn’t the team’s primary logo. The Eagles head that we all know and love will remain the primary logo — for the time being. In all reality, it’s only a matter of time before that changes, too.

Now, is this really a big deal at the end of the day? Actually, yes. Yes it is.

No one wanted this. No one begged the team to do this. No one started a petition to change the wordmarking. You know what fans did create a petition for and begged the team to do? Bring back the old school kelly green jerseys.

We love nostalgia here in Philly. I mean, doesn’t everyone? The whole modernizing trend just doesn’t fit this city. We like what we like.

This new wordmark just doesn’t do it for me. And based on the reactions from fans on social media, it doesn’t seem to do it for them either.

The point is, listen to the fans. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
