The Philadelphia Eagles have been no stranger to praise this offseason. National and local pundits alike tend to agree the Eagles are primed to be a playoff contender in 2022. That includes Pro Football Focus, who has sang the Eagles’ praises nearly every step of the way this offseason.
The outlet recently dropped their ranking of all 32 rosters in the NFL. They placed the Eagles seventh in the league, just ahead of the reigning AFC champion Bengals and Kansas City. Philly came in nine spots higher than Dallas as well.
From top to bottom, Howie Roseman has improved his team in almost every way. There are a few question marks here and there, but for the most part, Philadelphia’s roster is stout on both sides of the ball.
PFF broke down their explanations for each ranking with the biggest strength, biggest weakness, and the biggest x-factor for each squad. The positions that PFF cites for the Eagles in each category shouldn’t surprise anyone.
According to PFF — according to everyone really — the biggest strength on ths Eagles roster is their offensive line. They’ll return every starter from last season, which includes the return of Isaac Seumalo from injury. Philly’s offensive line has a unique blend of youthful potential and veteran building blocks. Jordan Mailata and Landon Dickerson both have Pro Bowl potential in the near future, while guys like Jason Kelce and Lane Johnson remain some of the best players at their position. Like last season, the Eagles offensive line will win games for them this season.
The team’s biggest weakness according to PFF, which again shouldn’t surprise anyone, is the safety position. The addition of Jaquiski Tartt will help stabilize the position this year, but he won’t change the complexion of the position like a Jessie Bates would have. He and Anthony Harris will likely be the primary starters, with Marcus Epps and K’Von Wallace filling in the third safety role. The position isn’t a complete liability for the Eagles defense, it’s just nothing special.
Finally, the biggest x-factor for the Eagles is, of course, Jalen Hurts. As PFF states, “They’ll only go as far as Jalen Hurts takes them.” This is a quarterback driven league. If you don’t have a franchise guy, you’re shit out of luck; no matter how good the rest of the roster is. We still don’t know if Hurts will be that guy and there are legitimate arguments on both sides of the debate.
Hurts will have everything a quarterback could possibly want heading into this season. A great offensive line, a great group of weapons, and a solid stable of backs behind him. By season’s end, we’ll know for certain in Hurts is that guy.
