After a wild start to the 2021-22 NFL season, the Philadelphia Eagles have finally punched their ticket to the postseason, albeit with help by the Green Bay Packers.
When it came to the Birds this season, the general consensus among Eagles fans and national pundits across the country alike was that it was a complete rebuild year. Led by first year head coach Nick Sirianni and a second-year quarterback in Jalen Hurts, it was staring us all in the face that the Eagles were not going to contend for the NFC East, let alone a wildcard spot in the brand-new seventeen game season.
The Eagles started their season with their heads held high, rolling into Atlanta with an absolute rout of a victory over the Falcons, with a final score of 32-6. After a statement first win for both coach and quarterback, the Birds fell into a three-game skid against the visiting 49ers, Chiefs, and an awful night at the hated Dallas Cowboys.
At that time, the Eagles were 1-3. Fans thought the season was inevitably lost after the Cowboys game, but from there it was a rollercoaster of wins and losses. Carolina, Detroit, Denver and New Orleans were some key wins throughout October and November, but even with those wins came horrific losses. Thanks to losses against Tampa Bay, Las Vegas, a heartbreaker against the Chargers and a distraught loss to the New York Giants, it felt as if the season was finally coming to where people thought it’d be.
However, thanks to a late bye in the year at Week 14, the Eagles returned with a full head of steam after COVID protocols postponed their division matchup against the COVID-riddled Washington Football Team. The Birds later put up three straight victories against Washington twice, and the visiting New York Giants.
So, now that we are in the playoffs, what do we do now?
Certainly, we all expect that this team cannot get to the Super Bowl. However, who’s to say we cannot make a dent in this year’s postseason?
Thanks to the running game that the Eagles have built over the latter half of the year, Philadelphia certainly look like a true threat in the dance. Jalen Hurts has also seemingly progressed in his own right, as he played arguably the best game of his young career against Washington this past Sunday.
What this team can accomplish is all up to them. They are definitely not the next Green Bay Packers, but perhaps they can squeak by against a seemingly crippled defending champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers, or maybe a date with destiny against the Dallas Cowboys.
Nonetheless, this team has certainly changed a lot of fan’s perspectives this year about how far this team can truly go. Who knows, maybe they will shock the world in the playoffs come the third week of January and make a run to the upper echelons of the NFC.
One thing is for certain, this team has the potential to do something great. What happens next is up to the coaches and the players, as they move on into their first NFL postseason.
